Project Title: Counteracting Witchcraft Narratives in Communities in Uganda Among Persons with Disabilities
Locations: Kisoro, Kagadi, and Rubanda Districts, Uganda
Background
Persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Uganda are often subjected to stigma, discrimination, and social exclusion due to harmful cultural narratives associating disability with witchcraft or curses. These misconceptions exacerbate the challenges PWDs face, limiting their access to education, healthcare, and social integration.
Ubuntu Disability Action for Development (UDAD) implements a project in Kisoro, Kagadi, and Rubanda districts aimed at addressing these harmful narratives. By fostering awareness, building local capacity, and promoting disability rights, this project will create an enabling environment for PWDs to thrive.
Overall Goal
- To challenge and eliminate witchcraft narratives targeting persons with disabilities, thereby promoting their social inclusion and empowerment in Kisoro, Kagadi, and Rubanda districts.
Specific Objectives
- To increase community awareness of the causes and realities of disabilities, challenging myths and misconceptions.
- To empower PWDs and their families to advocate for their rights and inclusion.
- To equip local leaders and stakeholders with tools and knowledge to address stigma and harmful beliefs in their communities.
